Tagore Lessons for Living Awake

Want to have a better week? Keep Awake!

I’m not saying sleep deprive yourself (more).

Please don’t deaden your senses further with the busy addiction you’re so accustomed to.

And stop trying to squeeze more “stuff” into your closets and your days. I mean: Make more moments matter by paying closer attention and reflecting on what each of your senses is experiencing.

You have enough time when you focus on making more moments matter. Pay closer attention to whoever you are with, wherever you are! Take a lesson from butterflies…

The butterfly counts not months but moments and has enough time.” –Rabindranath Tagore

What inspires you?

When I start becoming dulled in my daily routine, I turn to music, to nature, to art, and to words that inspire me. I reach out to connections who “know me” and some who don’t know me at all. People shake me back awake because my ears need to be wide, wide open to really listen.

Since I can’t be physically with you all to sing, dance, and maybe drag you out to look at the sky, I’ll share some ‘wake up’ words I treasure from Rabindranath Tagore.

The first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, Rabindranath Tagore was a poet, short story writer, song composer, novelist, playwright, essayist, and painter. In his 80 years (1861-1941), he brought humanism to the world in a way that hadn’t happened before.

what I love about you 7 Tagore Lessons

I encourage you to use these seven Tagore quotes to keep dreaming, striving, serving, hoping, and living more moments awake.

Serve to find joy. “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and beheld that service was joy.”

Take action. “You can’t cross the sea by merely standing and staring at the water.”

Make a heap of mistakes. “If you shut the door to all errors, truth will be shut out.”

Be ready to receive. “Everything comes to us that belongs to us if we create the capacity to receive it.”

Keep it simpler sweethearts. “It is very simple to be happy, but it is very difficult to be simple.”

Expand your reach. “Reach high, for stars lie hidden in you. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.”

Look for love in all the right places. “We live in the world when we love it.

This year, let’s stay awake, let’s pay closer attention, let’s love every moment more. Let’s hold onto that awareness regardless of the noise from those who may wish us to keep busy and feeling such scarcity and fear that we fall asleep.

Rabindranath Tagore ’s Gitanjali

“Where the mind is without fear

and the head is held high,

where knowledge is free.

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls.

Where words come out from the depth of truth,

where tireless striving stretches its arms toward perfection.

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost it’s way

into the dreary desert sand of dead habit.

Where the mind is led forward by thee

into ever widening thought and action.”
